The facts simply speak for themselves*:

• About 1 in 8 women in the United States (between 12 and 13%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
• In 2010, an estimated 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 54,010 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
• About 1,970 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men in 2010. Less than 1% of all new breast cancer cases occur in men.
• About 39,840 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2010 from breast cancer.
• For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
• Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women. More than 1 in 4 cancers in women (about 28%) are breast cancer.
• About 20-30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of breast cancer.
• About 70-80% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.

Some good news?

• Death rates have been decreasing since 1991. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.
• In 2010, there are more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.

We will be walking in the 2010 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ later this month. Walks are scheduled in many cities & towns across the nation this month. Check the one closest to you and get involved.

You can also donate to great organizations such as NationalBreastCancer.org, Susan G. Komen foundation and the American Cancer Society.

In the 19th century, paper became very widely used, thus creating a need for an efficient paper fastener. According to Wikipedia, the first known stapler was handmade in the 18th century in France for King Louis XV. Each staple was inscribed with the insignia of the royal court – so they must have been pretty large staples!!

The more modern-day stapler invention can be attributed to a man named George McGill. His very first patent was awarded in 1866, but that was for a simple brass fastener. In 1867 he obtained another patent which was for the device that actually inserted the fastener into the paper – pretty much paving the way to what we now know as the stapler. He took this invention to the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here’s  pic of one of George’s staplers:

Now, there is also one other man who can be attributed with the invention of the “stapler”. We found this interesting tidbit on Wikipedia:

“In 1877 Henry R. Heyl filed patent number 195603 for the first machines to both insert and clinch a staple in one step, and for this reason some consider him as the inventor of the modern stapler. In 1876 and 1877 Heyl also filed patents for the Novelty Paper Box Manufacturing Co of Philadelphia,PA , However, the N. P. B. Manufacturing Co.’s inventions were to be used to staple boxes and books.”

But for all intensive purposes…George McGill can be considered the founding inventor. (this is a hint and we hope you are paying attention!!). This can be backed up by the fact that on February 18, 1879,  McGill received a patent for a products called the “McGill Single-Stroke Staple Press” and this was indeed the very first stapler that was commercially successful.  It was a big monster weighing in at 2 1/2 pound with 1/2 inch wide staplers!
