October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You probably have seen ads on TV or BCA walks popping up all over your local area. Even the NFL is involved this month wearing everything from pink chin straps to pink sneakers. Good for them. This month is bound to be all about the PINK, and for good reason.
We are strong supporters of Breast Cancer Awareness & Research.
The facts simply speak for themselves*:
- About 1 in 8 women in the United States (between 12 and 13%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
- In 2010, an estimated 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 54,010 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
- About 1,970 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men in 2010. Less than 1% of all new breast cancer cases occur in men.
- About 39,840 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2010 from breast cancer.
- For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
- Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women. More than 1 in 4 cancers in women (about 28%) are breast cancer.
- About 20-30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of breast cancer.
- About 70-80% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.
Some good news?
- Death rates have been decreasing since 1991. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.
- In 2010, there are more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.

So, how can you help? It’s pretty easy. Get involved, spread facts that promote awareness or make a donation. We will be walking in the 2010 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ later this month. Walks are scheduled in many cities & towns across the nation this month. Check the one closest to you and get involved.
You can also donate to great organizations such as NationalBreastCancer.org, Susan G. Komen foundation and the American Cancer Society.
This month, we are encouraging all of our customers to purchase Breast Cancer Awareness office products instead of their regular products. A portion of all proceeds go to terrific non-profit organizations that support breast cancer research like City of Hope and Cancer Care.
